Colicky Baby Assessment

Colic is characterized by intense crying episodes and prolonged fussiness in an otherwise healthy infant. Other symptoms include Clenched Fists, Pulling Legs Up To the Abdomen, Tense Abdominal Muscle, and Difficulty Feeding or Sleeping.

Experts are not sure what causes colic, which begins at about 2 weeks old. However, some potential factors include an immature digestive system, an imbalance of healthy bacteria in the digestive tract, gas, overfeeding, underfeeding, infrequent burping, early childhood migraine, and family stress or anxiety.  Colic can be exhausting and emotionally draining for parents. Fortunately, colic goes away as the baby matures and is normally gone by about 3 or 4 months old

It is not unusual for a baby with colic to cry for 3 hours a day, several days a week.  If you ever feel yourself losing control, get help or take a minute to calm down. Never shake a baby. Shaking a baby out of frustration can cause permanent brain damage and other serious consequences. (See our Shaken Baby Syndrome Assessment.)

On average, it is estimated that about 5 to 28 percent of infants may have colic. Take this quick assessment to learn more about the symptoms of a colicky baby and help you determine whether or not your baby might be suffering from colic.

Tips For Soothing A Colicky Baby

It can be hard to soothe a colicky baby but the following tips might work:

1. Swaddle The Baby

Swaddling helps reduce fussiness. Wrap your child in a soft blanket so they may get a sense of safety.

2. Try White Noise

Use white noise machines, fans, and other calming sounds to create a soothing environment for your child.

3. Offer A Pacifier

The sucking motion from the pacifier can distract the baby from the discomfort.

4. Give A Warm Bath

A warm bath relaxes the muscles of the body.

5. Try Burping

Trapped air can cause gas-related discomfort. Burp your baby after every feed to help remove trapped air.
